Steps to Rooting Your Samsung Charge.

  • Gingerbread has been release for the Droid Charge. Hence, this how to root guide will only work if your Droid Charge has not updated to the Android Gingerbread OS. There are several hacked versions of rooting your Droid to Gingerbread. However, these versions were created to get Gingerbread on the device. Check back soon for updated Droid Charge Rooting procedure.

    Make sure your Charge has the most current software update. To find out which version you are currently running on your device, do the following:

    1. Click on the menu button of your device.
    2. In the menu that appears, click on Settings.
    3. When the Setting's screen apprears, scroll to bottom and click on "about phone."
    4. Again, scroll to the bottom of the page. The build number should read: SCH-I510.EE4. If it is anything else, click back up to top of menu and click on "System Updates" to update to version EE4.
  • Now that you have verified the version of software on your device, there are some files you will need to download. You will need to be working on a PC running the Windows Operating System (XP, Vista or 7). The following is the list of files you want to download to your computer and can be downloaded HERE .

    File Names:
    1. Chargedriver.exe - Samsung Charger Drivers.
    2. Odin3_v1.3 - Odin Software
    3. 0730_CWM_Recovery.tar.md5 - Clockwork MOD Recovery
    4. Rooted_Kernel.zip - Kernel File you will use to Root your device. Copy this file to SD card after download.
    5. sdcard_patch.zip - Patch for SD card. Copy this file to SD card after download.
  • Now that you have the required files downloaded to your windows computer, you can root your device. Make sure to back up your contacts via gmail sync and any other files before you root your device. Just to be safe. The SD card will not be affected in any way.

    The first step is to install Clockwork MOD Recovery to your phone:

    1. Turn off your Samsung Charge. Make sure it is not plugged into computer.
    2. Pull the battery out of phone.
    3. Close any apps on your computer and make sure antivirus is disable.
    4. Double click on the Odin file you downloaded earlier to open application.
    5. Plug your USB cable back into your computer. Then plug the usb cable into your phone.
    6. Hold down the "volume down" button until a yellow triangle download screen appears. Let go of the volume down button. In the Odin screen on your computer, you will see a yellow square in upper left corner with identifying which com port you are using. If you do not see this, then you are not connected.
    7. Put battery back in phone.
    8. Uncheck the box in Odin that says "Auto Reboot".
    9. In the Odin screen check the box next to the PDA button.
    10. Click on the PDA button.
    11. Navigate the Clockwork MOD file you downloaded and open it. The file is named 0730_CWM_Recovery.tar.md5.
    12. Check that your phone is connected to a com port, that you unchecked "Auto Reboot" and that you checked the box next to PDA.
    13. Click the Start Button. The file will get installed. You will see a blue "Restart" then a green "Pass" show in the upper right corner.

    You have just installed the Clockwork MOD Recovery. Now lets get the kernel and SD Card Fix installed.

    1. Take out the battery.
    2. Unplug device from Computer.
    3. Put battery back in device.
    4. Now Boot your device into recovery. Hold down the Home Key, the Up volume key, and the power button. After you see "SAMSUNG" you can let go of the power button, but continue to hold the home key and up volume until you are in recovery.
    In CWM, navigate up and down using the volume keys, select using the power key, and go back a menu using the back key.
    5. Select "install zip from sdcard".
    6. Select "choose zip from sdcard".
    7. Find and select your kernel's .zip file
    8. Repeat the above steps, but this time choose the SD Card fix file you downloaded.
    9. Hit the back key once. Make sure to "reboot device" is select and hit the power button to reboot.

    The phone will reboot and your phone will now be rooted. To verify the device is rooted, go in your app menu and find a file named "Superuser." This file is added when you root any android device. If the file is there, you are good. If it isnt there, try the steps again.
