Wi-Fi Digital Camera

So What is a Wi-Fi Digital Camera?

A Wi-Fi digital camera offers users the ability to do things a bit more efficiently. In essence they provide some of the conveniences of a camera phone with the higher quality images and photographic features of standalone digital cameras.

A Wi-Fi digital camera allows you to:

  • Download and save pictures to your computer wirelessly. No card reader or USB cables needed.

  • Transfer pictures to a compatible printer quickly and without wires or a computer.

  • Wirelessly transfer pictures to photo sharing sites.

  • Remote control of camera functions via computer in some instances.

  • What Do You Need to Operate a Wi-Fi Camera?

The most critical thing necessary in order to use your Wi-Fi digital camera will be a network connection. A wireless home network or a hotspot should do. Buyers should be sure to read the literature on the camera to understand exactly how that individual device can connect and to which sites it will easily transfer photos wirelessly.

Some Wi-Fi cameras will allow remote control of camera functions but certainly not all of them. Be sure you know which features you want, and which your camera can perform.

What are the Disadvantages of a Wi-Fi Digital Camera?

A Wi-Fi camera offers convenience but it does so at a price. These cameras generally cost significantly more than models with comparable features minus the Wi-Fi capabilities.

The number of models available are also limited. Buyers have fewer options so finding the camera with the features you want, with Wi-Fi capability is harder to do.

Are There Other Options for Getting the Convenience of Wireless Transfer?

Yes. With the Eye-Fi Explore wireless memory cards users can upload their photos to their computer (even if it's turned off) or to a photo sharing site using their home wireless network or Wayport Hotspot location across the country.

The Eye-Fi Explore also provides automatic geotagging. Of course an Eye-Fi Explore memory card will be more expensive than a traditional SD card.

Another option of course, is to use a Wi-Fi enabled camera phone. Camera phones have improved in recent years but most standalone compact cameras, even those under $200 still offer better photography. However, for some people this is still a good option.

    What Do You Say?

Will Your Next Camera Be a Wi-Fi Digital Camera?

Absolutely, I'm all about ease and convenience

Probably not, what's the bit deal?

    KayeSI says:

Probably not, since - in addition to my easy to use Canon Powershot digital camera - I also use my wonderful iPhone. BUT if I didn't have that, I would definitely check into it more. Thanks for the info.
