Verizon Samsung Omnia II SCH-i920 Reviewed

The Unbiased Review

Well maybe a little biased...I love this phone!

This phone is an awesome alternative to the iphone, and runs so much like a computer and true media center it isn't funny. I use my phone as my primary camera, video camera, and web browser (when on the go).

First the camera is better than the droids camera, hands down. The camera modes such as text, night, sports, continuous (burst) mosaic, and panorama for sewing together multiple shots. The camera has more features than my point in shoot digital camera (gave that to the wife since I have the Omnia 2 now).

The video camera is also superb. What many people do not know is that like the Droid the Omnia 2 takes DVD quality video in 720x480 format, but where the Droid only allows you to take video in a preselected number of seconds (around 30 sec) or minutes (30 min), the Omnia 2 is only limited by battery and available memory. The omnia also has a very good zoom function that allows the camera to zoom while recording video (how many point and shoot digital cameras can do that - not many). Also where the Omnia2 leaves the droid in the dust is the fact that you can use the LED flash while recording video - there is no LED flash available when recording video on the Droid.

Media formats - The Omnia 2 plays Divx, Xvid, MP4, WMV, H.263, H.264

Audio formats - MP3, AAC, AAC+, WMA

Unlike the Droid, the Omnia 2 does not ship with free GPS, but don't despair, just update your Bing app and you have free Turn-by-Turn GPS.

Another Pro is that its made by Samsung (generally good quality) and its not made by Motorola (enough said).

And SWYPE is the smoothest input feature ever. Just brilliant.

A very important feature that should not be overlooked is the fact that where the Droid can only store apps on it ROM memory (about 512 MB), the Omnia 2 can install apps on any of its memory (Main, pre-installed memory, or user installed memory card). This means that the Omnia is not limited by its permanent physical memory for the amount of apps that can be installed. What is the point of having 10,000 apps available when you can only fit a small fraction of them on your phone. Advantage: Omnia 2.

Overall I believe that the Omnia 2 is the ultimate device. I was almost fell into the hype of the Droids marketing campaign and nearly overlooked this gem of a phone.

Taking my time and researching the Omnia 2 has paid off and now my friends with Droids (those that just follow the herd) are envious because I have the superior device.

These are true phone specifications and some of my own opinion and I hope this helps others make an informed decision before purchasing their next phone.

Browsing

The mobile browsing experience is also great on the Omnia through the default Opera browser (you can also install other great browsers such as Skyfire too), what makes this a deal breaker for me is that the Omnia 2 has Flash Lite where the Droid does not. What this means is that when I go to YouTube to see a video it plays the video on the page just like I was visiting YouTube on my laptop. The Droid doesn't have Flash Lite so it has to send the YouTube video to its media player for viewing which kind of sucks and takes away from the experience of YouTube. If you like watching other video or movies online you can do that as well from the Omnia 2 just as you would from your PC.

The Best Un-advertised Bonus

TV Out function!!! This is one they didn't advertise too much but I found it by using my JVC camcorder TV out cables. What it does it allow you to pass what ever is on you phone screen and phone audio to a TV set via RCA plugs and it is way better than S-Video. So if your watching a video on YouTube on the Omnia 2 you can use the TV Out to watch the video on you big screen computer. Or just watch the stored home videos on a bigger screen. Its so much like using a regular camcorder it isn't funny. I don't know how many phones have TV Out but short of that LG Projector Phone, I don't think any do. I just wish it came with the TV Out cable.
