While on paper the Galaxy S3 wins with brute processing strength, the iPhone 5 is the winner of a sleeker looking handset. But let's take a look at what all this means in a bit more detail.

Processing Power

While the iPhone 5 has a new generation A6 processor, the Samsung Galaxy S3's is faster on paper. The iPhone 5 has a 1.2GHz (speculative) dual-core processor against the Galaxy S3's 1.4GHZ dual-core. Despite this, you can pretty much guarantee that everything on the iPhone 5 will run as smoothly as always; but the Galaxy S3 is also super smooth.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy S3

Operating System

As we all know from the patent wars, the smartphone fanboys and the internet forums; the iPhone 5 runs on iOS and the Galaxy S3 on Android. Both have huge benefits, and I'm going to stay neutral about this! As expected, iOS is incredibly usable with a great quality app store and is inherently smooth to run. However, Android has come on in leaps and bounds and offers openness and has grown to be beautiful also. While we haven't seen what iOS6 can do properly yet, and what the Galaxy S3 looks like running the Jellybean update, unfortunately this will stay as an old-fashioned debate about which is better; iOS or Android. Everyone has their own preference. However I urge any iOS user to try an up-to-date version of Android running on a slick handset. But also, right back at ya, Android users; go try the new iPhone!

Winner: Draw

Battery

Apple have confirmed that the iPhone 5 will have the same battery power as the iPhone 4S. That's 8 hours of talk time over a 3G network. The Galaxy S3 has almost 12 hours of 3G talk time, which to be honest, wins over the iPhone 5 hands down.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy S3

Design

The Samsung Galaxy S3 definitely looks like something new from Samsung. It's large, but thin and sleek. However, if you read around the internet it's not to everyone's taste, especially the plastic outer casing. Despite being plastic, the Galaxy S3 feels solidly built. On the flip side, the iPhone 5's design quite obviously hasn't changed much, but it is thinner and the back is made from metal. This definitely looks and feels more attractive than the plastic of the S3. At the end of the day though, the attractiveness of the design is in the eye of the beholder.

Winner: Apple iPhone 5

Memory Capacity

Both the Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 come with 16GB, 32GB and 64GB memory options. While you'd obviously pay more up front for more memory, the Galaxy S3 has a Micro SD memory card slot. This slot allows you to expand your memory up to an extra 64GB for a relatively low price and at any time. You can also carry around additional memory cards if you're an extremely heavy consumer of multimedia.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy S3

Accessories Availability

If the dock connector had stayed the same, the iPhone 5 would have won this category hands down. While there are already a tonne of iPhone accessories out there, many of them have been made obsolete because of the dock connector change. While there are already cases and other accessories in production for the iPhone 5, the Samsung Galaxy S3 has been on the market for some time already. Couple this with the standard Micro USB dock connector of the S3, you can see they have quite a lead already.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy S3

Conclusion - Which Handset Reigns Supreme?

While the Samsung Galaxy S3 has won in a majority of the categories listed above, the iPhone 5 is a cracking phone. I mean, it's an iPhone! This is easily the best version of the iPhone yet, and the extra screen real estate and slight processor bump is greatly appreciated. Yes, it still kinda looks the same as before and runs the same OS, but iOS is still a great OS. You can't beat the iPhone for usability and good looks.

But the Samsung Galaxy S3. Oh boy. It's a wonderful powerhouse of a phone. This handset really shows off what Android can do, and Samsung's customisations look and feel great. This is easily the best Android phone on the market at the moment. And it has a headstart with all the Galaxy S3 accessories readily available too.

So I leave the choice down to you. If you want the latest stylish trend with an easy to use and incredibly familiar interface, go with Apple. I'm sure a lot of people will buy this phone because it's an iPhone. And I really wouldn't blame you. But the Galaxy S3 is gorgeous and feature packed. All the features you could ever need from a phone are there at your fingertips, more so than the iPhone 5.
