The Difference Between Various Types of TV
CRT TVs

CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) TVs were the normal until fairly recently. These behemoths certainly served their purpose and produced fairly good quality pictures. However, they were all incredibly big and heavy, tended to get rather hot during extended periods of use and could affected by screen burn-in. They were also rather hazardous to repair if they happened to break down.
LCD TVs

LCD (Liquid-Crystal Display) TVs use the technology of their namesake to produce the images that you see. Far thinner and lighter than CRT TVs (as well as using less power), flat LCD screens of various tend to be used on a number of gadgets including laptops, watches and smartphones.
LED TVs

The primary difference between an LED and LCD TV is that the former uses LED backlighting instead of the latter's cold cathode variety. LED TVs result in thinner panels, a brighter and better contrasted display as well as using less power and better dissipating heat.
3D TVs

Even sets featuring the very latest 3D TV technology tend to also function as regular 2D televisions (these usually being referred to as 3D-ready in order to differentiate them from full 3D sets). Stereoscopic 3D is the most common time, this being the one that requires you to wear those special red and blue-lensed glasses in order for it to work. An autostereoscopic screen is one that does not require these glasses (for example like that found on a Nintendo 3DS).
So is it worth getting a 3D TV?

It all depends on whether you'll use it, really.
The most common uses for a 3D television tend to be watching films or playing video games; few people feel the urge to watch everyday television in full 3D (yet). They certainly heighten your experience, especially in films and games specifically engineered to take advantage of the technology (for example Avatar and Batman: Arkham City respectively).
Addtionally, seeing a 3D film in the cinema is one thing but being able to do so in the comfort of your own home is something else.
In the end, however, the decision is up to you.
