Internet Connected TV

So What Does an Internet Connected TV Offer?

type=text
An internet connected TV can give you access to content online. In most cases, these television sets will give you access to streaming video from select free and paid services as well as providing widgets to give you access to information such as weather reports, stock information, traffic, and so forth. Some also provide access to sites such as Flickr, Facebook, and Twitter. They are also offering more apps for gaming making them a well rounded entertainment device. Increasingly, these sets are connecting people, not only through online social networks but through services like Skype video calling.

They allow you to control all of this with your television remote. Some of these remotes are much better suited to web browsing. Some have full QWERTY keyboards, others have touchscreens, wands, and so forth for easier navigation.

Access to YouTube, Amazon on Demand, Pandora, and Netflix are common, but there are many other providers as well. Providers are added periodically. While there is quite a bit of free content, some of it requires a subscription. Netflix and Amazon on Demand are examples of the paid services.

Sony, Samsung, and LG are the leading providers of internet connected TV models.

Terminology

Internet connected TV models are becoming more and more prevalent. You may see them called other things. For instance, web enabled TV or perhaps smart TV. But in reality they are all the same thing. A TV that provides access to internet content.

What are My Options for Getting Internet on My TV?

As described above, some internet connected TV sets provide access to select online content, both free and for a fee. Some TVs have the necessary technology built-in. There are some however, that require an additional, separate device to connect and stream such content. The TVs below have the technology built-in.

In addition, there are a few external devices out there that can connect to your HDTV and provide a full internet experience. Some are good for browsing the internet and sending e-mails, while others have a faster connection and can do a better job at displaying video content in addition to basic web browsing. We have a few of these devices below.

Of course another option is to connect your laptop directly to your TV. There is a video posted below to show you how this is done.

Certainly there are also a number of set top boxes that can help. We have an entire page about Netflix Players specifically. In addition however, there other set top boxes which give you access to streaming movies from a variety of services online using your broadband connection. Learn more about them below.
