With HDTV becoming more and more common, LED and LCD TVs are everywhere. But what's the difference?

When it comes down to it, there's not a huge difference between the two. In fact, an LED TV is a type of LCD. They begin with a light at the back. The screens are made of two layers of glass polarized together that will either block or pass light to make the TV picture.

Technologically speaking, the difference comes down to the type of backlight in the different TV. A regular LCD TV uses fluorescent lighting, while an LED TV obviously uses LED lights, like the ones that are being seen more and more often in the form of flashlights, holiday light strings, and even car headlights. However, those lights make a world of difference when it comes to factors that influence consumers.

• Picture Quality: LED's have better black and white levels. This means that in a darker scene in what you're watching, the whole picture won't be overwhelmed with shadows.
  Alternatively, a better white level means that in bright scenes, you don't lose detail. Also, LED's tend to have better color accuracy. Also, LED's will brighten and dim based on the picture.
  
  Now don't take this to mean that LCD TV's have poor picture quality. LED's just have a slight edge.
  
  Energy efficiency: While this may not always be the first thing to come to mind when picking a TV, LED's tend to be the "green" option, since the lights use less energy. They'll also cut an electric bill just a little bit.
  
  Size: Because of the small size of LED lights, manufacturers are able to trim a bit of size for a slimmer TV that can be set up in different places.
  
  While it's not a massive size difference, a 27" LED TV will weigh just slightly less than its LCD counterpart.
  


• Usage: Video game consoles and LED TV's aren't the best combination. They can cause "burn in" which is what happens when images are permanently faintly burned into the screen. This is usually caused by an image staying on the screen for a long time. This is less likely to happen with an LCD TV. This is also an issue with watching sports games and sometimes news channels.
  



• Price: LCD's are obviously cheaper thanks to the fact that there's a better market for LED TV's. However, while money is very likely an object, it's always better to shop around because warranties, different means of production, sound quality, amount of usable space, and a myriad of other factors can change the price drastically.
  

Overall, for a simple TV experience, LED TV's are the best option with a higher picture quality. They're also a more energy efficient option.
However, for avid gamers or sports fans, an LCD TV is the way to go with a lower risk of ruining the picture.
